Sally Barker, an English vocalist and composer, first earned recognition via her folk compositions during the 1980s before advancing to the concluding round of The Voice UK in 2014. Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire, marks her birthplace, where a blues-tinged vocal delivery and accomplished guitar technique drew inspiration from Bessie Smith, John Martyn, and Aretha Franklin. Her professional start came as half of the duo Sally & Chris, delivering folk-blues sets in Midlands pubs. Relocating to London in 1986, she launched her solo path and captured the National Song Search Competition the next year, which opened support slots alongside Fairport Convention and Taj Mahal. The self-titled debut arrived in 1989, yet the 1990 follow-up This Rhythm Is Mine signaled growing artistic depth and secured opening appearances with Bob Dylan and Robert Plant. That same year she co-founded the Poozies, whose sound blended Cajun, folk, blues, and country elements; harpists Mary McMaster and Patsy Seddon of Sileás joined fiddle player Jenny Gardner and accordionist Karen Tweed in the lineup. The group issued two albums before Barker exited in 1995 ahead of her first child’s arrival. Subsequent activity remained sporadic, though she contributed vocals to Pete Morton’s 1997 Courage, Love & Grace and appeared on Janet Russell’s 1998 Gathering the Fragments. Full return occurred only in 2003 with Maid in England, the product of six years of interrupted songwriting caused by two pregnancies and her husband’s fatal illness, which claimed him months after the record’s release. Music then shifted toward formal study when Barker enrolled in a Music Technology course at de Montfort University. Nearly a decade after leaving the Poozies, she rejoined temporarily in 2006 to cover for pregnant Eilidh Shaw, then rejoined permanently the following year. Post-graduation she launched the Joni Mitchell Project alongside pianist Glenn Hughes, drawing from Mitchell’s catalog; Conversation: The Joni Tapes, Vol.1 emerged in 2010. Additional collaborations included Genfan & Barker with American guitarist Vicki Genfen, Buck & Barker with multi-instrumentalist Keith Buck, and Barker & Son with her son Dillon Wakeford. A 2013 health setback prompted family encouragement to audition for the BBC series The Voice. On the 2014 blind audition Barker performed Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” earning selection from coach Tom Jones. Subsequent performances of Dionne Warwick’s “Walk on By” and Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” carried her to the finale, where a duet of “Walking in Memphis” with mentor Tom Jones and a cover of Olly Murs’ “Dear Darlin’,” which reached the U.K. Top 40 Singles chart, still left her runner-up to winner Jermain Jackman.
