Anchoring the Delta Jukes—a fluid assembly of seasoned Mississippi blues players—stands the storied Delta percussionist Sam Carr. The son of bluesman Robert Nighthawk, Carr began his career performing in his father’s ensemble with guitarist Frank Frost. After Nighthawk’s passing, Frost and Carr recruited Big Jack Johnson on guitar to launch the Jelly Roll Kings. Johnson’s departure for a solo path, together with Frost’s death in 1999, prompted Carr to enlist guitarist Fred James, at which point the band adopted the name Delta Jukes. Singer/guitarist Dave Riley and singer/harmonica player John Weston complete the classic Jukes roster. The group delivers crisp, no-frills modern Delta blues, beginning with their debut release, Working for the Blues, produced by Fred James and issued in 2002.
