At the age of nineteen, while enrolled as a composition student at Northwestern University, pianist Sam Stryke—also known by his birth name, Sam Struyk—saw his first album, the new age instrumental In the Wind, issued by Atlantic in 1991, though the project was ultimately shelved. Undeterred, Stryke went on to compose music for countless television advertisements and independently put out Emerging in 2002. Having received a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Study Grant in 1994, he issued Christmas four years later, presenting an acoustic contemporary instrumental interpretation of seasonal standards and new material that included one vocal contribution by Alice Peacock.
