Biography
Leading Makonde, the Stockholm-based ensemble blending players from Sweden, Zaire, and Gambia, is bassist and singer Sammy Kasule. The group fuses African soukous with Afro-Cuban rhythms to create its signature polished, pop-infused style. Kasule first drew notice in Vundumuna, the band he formed in 1984 together with guitarist Tabu Frantal and keyboardist Botango Bedjil. That unit issued three memorable albums before disbanding in 1986.
