Biography
Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Sandra Rhodes carved out a distinctive niche by bridging country traditions with Southern soul textures. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, she entered a household steeped in music; her father, known as "Dusty" Rhodes, performed alongside his siblings in the group "Slim" Rhodes & His Mountaineers, a Tennessee favorite that cut sides for Sun Records and headlined the locally televised series The Rhodes Show between 1948 and 1975.
Rhodes launched her recording career alongside sister Donna as the Rhodes Sisters, issuing singles on the Penthouse, Dot, and Dial imprints in 1964 and 1965. From 1967 to 1968 the siblings appeared on RCA under the name Lonesome Rhodes, culminating in the 1968 album Sandy & Donna. She later married multi-instrumentalist Charlie Chalmers, whose own Chess recordings preceded their partnership; together with Donna they performed and recorded as Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes, occasionally shortened to RCR. The trio placed singles on Radio Records throughout the 1970s and delivered a full-length Warner Bros. album in 1980, yet their most enduring contributions came as session players supplying vocals and instrumentation for both R&B and country acts throughout the Memphis studio scene.
Individually, Rhodes thrived as a backing singer and composer, lending her voice to dates with Millie Jackson, Melissa Manchester, and Al Green while placing original material with Skeeter Davis, Isaac Hayes, Conway Twitty, and the Staple Singers. In 1972 she secured a solo contract with Fantasy Records and co-produced her debut album, Where's Your Love Been, with Chalmers; the set fused soul, country, and rock yet failed commercially and remained her sole long-form solo release. Even after her marriage to Chalmers ended, she, Donna, and Charlie sustained their collaborative studio and touring work. In 2013 Sandra and Donna rejoined a revived edition of The Rhodes Show, and the following year Omnivore Records released the first compact-disc edition of Where's Your Love Been, appending seven previously unreleased tracks from the original sessions.
