Biography
Indian vocalist Sanjay Subrahmanyan helped spark the late-'80s revival of carnatic music, South India's classical vocal tradition, through his deep command of the form and commanding vocal presence. He started formal training at age seven on the violin and simultaneously absorbed the basic principles of carnatic music. An injury that curtailed his violin playing prompted a switch to singing when he turned fourteen; for the next seven years he studied with his great aunt, Smt. Rukmini Rajagopalan, an important Indian voice teacher. While maintaining a full-time career as an accountant in India, he toured internationally and broadened awareness of carnatic music, an achievement documented on the live albums Kutcheri Live in the USA (2000) and December Season 2001 (2004), both recorded in India. In 2003 he issued Tillai: Compositions of Gopalakrishna Bharat, followed the next year by Tunga Tarange...On the Banks Of.
