Originating from a modest settlement in England’s western midlands, bassist Sara Lee landed her first major opportunity while employed as a secretary at Polydor Records. An invitation to perform for legendary musician Robert Fripp followed, opening the door to subsequent work alongside Robyn Hitchcock and Gang of Four. After relocating to the United States, she secured further studio and touring assignments with Ani DiFranco, the B-52's, the Indigo Girls, Joan Osbourne, Fiona Apple, and additional artists. Her ties to DiFranco proved especially rewarding when, in autumn 2000, DiFranco’s own imprint Righteous Babe Records released Lee’s debut solo album, Make It Beautiful. Shaped by the funky bass lines she had developed across nearly 20 years, the record includes lyrics contributed by several noted songwriters, among them DiFranco, Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, Kristen Hall, and Pal Shazar.
