Biography
Originating from Springfield, Massachusetts, the remarkably agile jazz vocalist and composer Sarah Elizabeth Charles first began cultivating her abilities while still in elementary school. Upon completing secondary education she moved to New York City, enrolled at the New School, and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Along the way her musical trajectory intersected with those of Geri Allen, Cecil Bridgewater, George Cables, and Sheila Jordan. In 2012 she issued her debut album Red, backed by drummer John Davis, pianist Jesse Elder, and bassist Burniss Earl Travis, who performed collectively as the S.E. Charles Quartet. Three years afterward Charles and that same trio brought out the follow-up Inner Dialogue, which she co-produced with Christian Scott.
