Biography
Satur helped establish the Mangueira samba school in 1929 after belonging to its forerunner, Bloco dos Arengueiros, and served as the school's inaugural president from that year until his death in 1935. He also co-founded the União das Escolas de Samba do Brasil in 1934, taking the post of vice president. A prolific samba composer, he supplied his daughter, the celebrated porta-bandeira Dona Neuma, with the song "Fiquei Sem Esperança," which she included on the 2000 double-CD set Mangueira/Sambas de Terreiro e Outros Sambas; written only two months before his passing, the piece coincided exactly with his appearance in Mangueira's contingent during the inaugural official Carnaval contest of 1935. Satur further distinguished himself by mediating the often violent clashes that flared among Rio de Janeiro's competing neighborhoods and hills.
Born in the Estácio district, the very cradle of modern urban samba where maxixe-infused rhythms first took shape inside Tia Ciata's residence, he absorbed the techniques of the local batuqueiros, mastering the tamborim, the pandeiro, and the dish-and-knife while also learning to improvise in the partido-alto style. Drawn to the Mangueira hill, he became a frequent presence there beginning in the early 1920s. Up until his final days he continued to create sambas de terreiro that remained favorites throughout Mangueira.
