Biography
Alternative metal outfit Scheer came together in Northern Ireland during 1993 when Audrey Gallagher joined Neal Calderwood, Joe Bates, Paddy Leyden and Peter Fleming. The group built a modest profile across the latter half of the decade after several years spent performing in modest Irish clubs. SON, an independent label based in Ireland, eventually offered them a deal, resulting in the late-1993 appearance of their first single, “Wish You Were Dead.” Strong early interest prompted the band to issue the Psychobabble EP the following year.
Scheer moved to the 4AD roster in April 1995 and promptly delivered the Schism EP. Their debut album, already completed by 1996, was trailed by the singles “Shea” and a reworked version of “Wish You Were Dead.” Issued that same year, Infliction earned widespread praise yet attracted only a dedicated cult audience. Combining heavy guitar textures with power-pop structures beneath Gallagher’s unmistakable voice, the record achieved modest alternative success driven chiefly by the impact of “Wish You Were Dead.” Work on a follow-up began in 1997, but a contract dispute with 4AD kept the project on hold until the middle of 2000, when the appropriately named And Finally finally surfaced.
