Schleigho, pronounced shlay-ho, originated as a New York City quartet during the members’ enrollment at Boston’s Berklee School of Music. Drummer Erik Egol, flutist/guitarist Suke Cerulo, jazz pianist Jesse Gibbon, and bassist Matt Rubano, each drawn to jazz from the start, developed a sound echoing Bela Fleck and Medeski, Martin & Wood. The group built recognition on the college rock circuit, became regular performers at the Knitting Factory, and shared bills with jazz aficionados such as Fleck, Maceo Parker, and Galatic. Their fourth CD, Continent, arrived in mid-2000 via Flying Frog Records, the label launched by Butch Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band; Paco Mahone stepped in for the departed Rubano, who later joined emo-rockers Taking Back Sunday, on the subsequent tour. Live at Ho-Down 2000 surfaced in spring 2001.
