Biography
Scolohofo draws its moniker from select letters shared among its members' names, uniting the skills of guitarist John Scofield, saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Al Foster into a jazz supergroup. Although the ensemble officially coalesced in 1999 amid Lovano's weeklong engagement at the Montreal Jazz Festival, its participants share far deeper prior connections. Foster and Scofield, for instance, played together in trumpeter/jazz legend Miles Davis' band throughout the early '80s. Their paths likewise intersected with Lovano's, whose collaboration with Scofield originated in the '70s during joint work in Boston. The band undertook initial tours in 1999 and again in 2002, paving the way for the studio recording of its debut album, Oh!, which appeared on Blue Note in 2003.
