Biography
Scotland Barr & the Slow Drags operate as a relentlessly road-focused ensemble based in Portland, Oregon. Their approach merges the storytelling emphasis of singer/songwriters, the classic rock and pop sounds of the 1970s, the foundational alt-country groups from the 1990s, and the more experimental branches of indie rock, producing a style anchored simultaneously in earlier eras and current sensibilities.
Scotland Barr, the principal songwriter and bandleader, arrived in Portland during 1992. While collaborating with several local outfits including Gage and Whipping Dead Horses, he earned recognition as one of the city’s most singular songwriters on the music scene.
Barr launched the Slow Drags in 2004 initially as a recording endeavor. The musicians—Zach Hinkleman on lead guitar, Bryan Daste on pedal steel, Theremin, and saxophone, Chris Hubbard on keyboards, Jordan Korach on bass, and Merrill Hale on drums—immediately recognized a shared musical connection and began performing in clubs across the Northwest.
The group issued its debut album, Legionnaires Disease, in 2005 and launched an aggressive touring schedule that covered the full length of the West Coast and extended regularly through the Southwest. The Slow Drags’ vigorous stage presence alongside Barr’s material fostered a devoted following, leading to the release of their second album, All the Great Aviators Agree, in 2008.
