Originating in Austin, TX, the post-hardcore noise ensemble Scratch Acid established foundational influences for numerous distorted, grinding alternative punk acts of the '90s. The unit assembled in 1982 with Steve Anderson handling vocals, David Wm. Sims on guitar, Brett Bradford on guitar, David Yow on bass, and Rey Washam on drums. Anderson's removal followed soon after, prompting a brief period of instrumental performance only. Yow then assumed vocals while Sims moved to bass, after which the self-titled EP appeared in 1984. Two years later came the full-length Just Keep Eating together with the scathing Berserker EP. An extended tour across America and Europe preceded Scratch Acid's dissolution in May of 1987. Sims and Washam then aligned with Steve Albini to launch the consciously caustic Rapeman. Once Rapeman ended, Sims rejoined David Yow to create the Jesus Lizard in 1989, thereby continuing directly from Scratch Acid's prior direction.
