Scully hail from New York City and define their sound through the phrase “Scuzzy guitars, California sunshine, Brooklyn grime,” blending garage rock, psychedelia, and hard rock into one potent mixture. Their shared history dates to 2009, when the California groups the Splinters and the Numerators crossed paths while attending the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. The ensembles quickly bonded, and after the Splinters disbanded, guitarist and singer Caroline Partamian relocated to New York. In 2014 her former Splinters colleagues Courtney Gray on guitar and vocals along with Lauren Stern on bass and vocals followed her eastward to form a fresh ensemble. Seeking a drummer, they first enlisted Kyle Bronko Carlson, who also handled production on the band’s initial demo recording. Carlson further contributed to a split cassette Scully issued jointly with Las Rosas. By August 2015, when a split single with La Luz appeared, Carlson had departed; the group then recruited Burgers Rana, longtime drummer for the Numerators. Rana came aboard, and in mid-2016 Scully issued the six-song EP No Sense.
