Hailing from Warren, Ohio, where he was born in 1978, trumpeter Sean Jones approaches jazz with an assertive, robust post-bop sensibility. He first picked up the trumpet during fifth grade and, by the time he reached high school, had cultivated a deep fascination with the genre, particularly the recordings of Miles Davis. Local club appearances and engagements with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra soon followed, leading him to pursue formal studies at Youngstown State University’s music program in Ohio. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Jones obtained a master’s from Rutgers University.

Since then he has collaborated with an array of established artists that includes Joe Lovano and Frank Foster. He also holds a longstanding position in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra while serving on the faculty of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His first Mack Avenue recording, Eternal Journey, appeared in 2004. The follow-up albums Gemini and Roots arrived in 2005 and 2006, respectively. In 2007 Jones issued Kaleidoscope, which spotlighted several vocalists, among them Gretchen Parlato. Two years later came his fifth Mack Avenue project, the expansive The Search Within. Jones returned in 2011 with No Need for Words, a collection loosely organized around love and its many modes of expression.
