Listen on Coda
Born around 1980 in England, Pipe took up the alto saxophone at seven and later added guitar, piano and drums to his instrumental skills. He trained at Trinity College in London, where his approach was shaped by the work of Julian Argüelles, Steve Coleman and Jean Toussaint. Drawing material from contemporary jazz, classical traditions and ethnic music spanning Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas, he has cultivated a devoted international audience. Among the musicians he has performed with are Andy Davies and Pequeños Mundos. Early in the 2000s he assembled the group Life Experience, which received a development award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund that helped support a UK tour in 2006; the same year the ensemble also performed at the London Jazz Festival. His regular partners in Life Experience include Arthur Lea (b. 1983, London, England; piano), Larry Bartley (bass) and Chris Vatalaro (b. New York City, New York, USA; drums).
