Biography
Sebastian Duron served as organist and composer in posts at Seville Cathedral, Burgo de Osma, and Madrid’s royal chapel before relocating to Bayonne, France, amid the War of Spanish Succession. His reputation rested on forward-looking methods that drew notice across distances as remote as Peru, yet his output also provoked posthumous criticism for departing from established norms. Scores placed heavy demands on string players, and Duron sought to align each individual note with the precise meaning of the accompanying text. His catalog encompassed zarzuelas, operas, sacred pieces, songs, and villancicos.
