While active in the emo outfit Karate, singer and guitarist Geoff Farina joined forces with his closest companion Jodi Buonanno in the middle of 1993 to establish the Boston-rooted lo-fi folk-pop pair known as the Secret Stars. Envisioned primarily as a persistent artistic endeavor instead of a conventional group, the duo put out their self-titled first cassette independently during 1994 before issuing the same recordings via Shrimper the year after. With Farina dedicating the majority of the mid-1990s to his commitments in Karate, the Secret Stars produced no further output until the appearance of their LP Genealogies in 1998, followed later in that year by the seven-inch single "Abner Louima."
