Biography
Formed in Oakland, California, Secrets of the Sky function as a five-piece metal ensemble whose style fuses blackened doom with neo-psychedelic and progressive atmospherics and sonics. Guitarists and keyboardists Chris Anderson and Clayton Bartholomew established the project after they began collaborating in 2009. In 2010 they moved into deliberate songwriting with the explicit goal of recruiting additional players to realize their joint concepts. Extensive auditions for rhythm-section players and vocalists continued until the roster locked in during 2011, when drummer Lance Lea, bassist Ryan Healy, third guitarist Andy Green, and vocalist Garett Gazay completed a sextet. Another full year of rehearsal, composition, and regional gigs around the Bay Area led the group into Trident Studios in 2012, where producer and engineer Juan Urteaga oversaw the recording of To Sail Black Waters; Gravedancer Records issued the album with EMI distribution in early 2013. Following sustained touring, Anderson exited and was not replaced. After signing with Metal Blade, Secrets of the Sky returned to the studio to complete their second album, Pathway, which appeared in spring 2015.
