Biography
Atlanta-based Seely emerged as the first U.S. act to sign with the British independent Too Pure, a label formerly associated with PJ Harvey, Stereolab, and Seefeel. Their music carried a distinctly British dream-pop sensibility shaped by the influence of My Bloody Valentine. Guitarist and vocalist Steven Satterfield joined guitarist Lori Scacco—both architecture students—to found the group in Atlanta during 1994. Vocalist and bassist Joy Waters plus drummer Eric Taylor completed the lineup, and the quartet subsequently toured the States in the company of sympathetic acts including Yo La Tengo, Third Eye Foundation, and Trans Am. Too Pure issued the 1996 debut album Julie Only, a sparkling specimen of indie psychedelia whose pristine production came from Tortoise’s John McEntire. The sophomore LP Seconds surfaced in 1997, while Winter Birds arrived in early 2000.
