Biography
In 2004, Sacramento emo-pop act Self Against City assembled its lineup. Merely five months later the group earned the distinction of becoming the first act signed to Rushmore Records, an imprint of Drive-Thru. Frontman Jonathan Michael Temkin, guitarists Jack Matranga and Jeff LaTour, bassist Patrick O'Connor, and drummer Chris Trombley uploaded early recordings that caught the ear of Drive-Thru co-owner Richard Reines, prompting an invitation to showcase for the label. The band ultimately secured its contract in late 2004, taking its name from a misheard radio DJ’s mention of Bowie’s “Suffragette City.” Debut EP Take It How You Want It surfaced in April 2005, its sound evoking Mae or the Early November, and the quintet spent the ensuing months touring alongside labelmates Houston Calls. Sessions for the first Rushmore full-length opened in March 2006 with producer Steve Haigler (Pixies, Brand New) and concluded that June, after which O’Connor and Trombley left the group. Telling Secrets to Strangers reached stores in early January 2007.
