Dublin-based quintet September Girls fused shadowy noise-pop melodies with garage-rock edges reminiscent of Veronica Falls and Vivian Girls. Five friends—Paula Cullen on bass and vocals, Caoimhe Derwin on guitar and vocals, Lauren Kerchner on keyboards and vocals, Jessie Ward on guitar and vocals, and Sarah Grimes on drums—launched the all-female group in 2011. Their sound drew from the shoegaze textures of My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, while Phil Spector-style vocal layers floated above layers of fuzzy distortion and heavy drums. Reverb-drenched singing contrasted with abrasive guitars and sustained organ tones that prompted parallels to their touring companions PINS. Several singles appeared on independent imprints during 2012, among them a cassette issued by PINS’ Haus of Pins and a 7-inch on the California label Matinée, before Fortuna Pop signed the band. Returning to Dublin in 2013, the musicians composed and tracked their first album, Cursing the Sea, which surfaced in early 2014; later the same year they issued the four-track EP Veneer. Much of the next twelve months was devoted to live dates and prominent festival slots across the U.K. and U.S. Their second album, Age of Indignation, emerged in early 2016 and displayed a murkier atmosphere alongside heightened urgency.
