Biography
Serani Poji emerged from Tokyo’s late-1990s Shibuya-kei movement as a Japanese pop ensemble whose central figure, video-game composer and producer Sasaki Tomoko, assumed complete control after the 2004 album Ochamekan. The project’s next outing, Merry Go Round Jailhouse, surfaced in 2010 and was followed by an extended pause. Interest resurfaced sharply in 2023 when one of the group’s older tracks circulated widely online, prompting Tomoko to issue the alternate mix “Pipo Pipo (Sped Up Version)” before year’s end.
The story began in 1999 when composer Tomoko, producer Fukutomi Yukihiro, and vocalist Yukichi contributed to the Sega Dreamcast title ROOMMANIA#203. Strong reception for that soundtrack led the three to form Serani Poji, taking the name from a character in the game. Their sound blended polished synth-pop textures with the retro-leaning pop then flourishing in the Shibuya-kei circle, itself shaped by 1960s figures such as Brian Wilson and Burt Bacharach. Following the debut album Manamoon, Yukichi stepped aside and Higashino Yumi took the lead vocal role for the 2002 release One-Room Survival. Fukutomi Yukihiro soon withdrew as well, leaving Tomoko to handle every production task on Ochamekan. After a stretch of quiet, she declared that future material would be created alone; the resulting fourth album, Merry Go Round Jailhouse, appeared in 2010 with Tomoko credited for all vocals and production. The project then entered hiatus. A short-lived attempt at revival occurred in 2017 when Tomoko revealed plans for new songs tied to a planned ROOMMANIA#203 sequel, yet that effort was abandoned.
More than twenty years after its first appearance, the track “Pipopipo” began circulating on TikTok and additional platforms in 2023, drawing fresh listeners to the catalog and leading Tomoko to release “Pipo Pipo (Sped Up Version)” later that year.
