Born in Lake City, Michigan, to parents embedded in a collective farm community, Samuel Seth Bernard grew up immersed in a circle of musicians and artists that sparked his early passion for performance. Following his graduation from Lake City High School, he devoted a year to poetry, music, and acting at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. He later appeared alongside Ernest Borgnine in the 2000 film The Lost Treasure of Sawtooth Island, shot in Frankfort, Michigan, and toured with the National Theater for Children. After a short stay in New York City, Bernard returned to Michigan and channeled his focus into songwriting. Over two years he tracked a series of original compositions at the home studio of his friend and guitar instructor Michael Macnamara, resulting in the 2001 release Hello Fellow Travelers, the inaugural Earthwork Music title. His family had already used the name Earthwork for farm goods, and Bernard extended it to his recordings; soon a network of fellow musicians began issuing work through the imprint, transforming it into a compact yet energetic collective that offered responsible support for aligned artists. The Earthwork Farm also launched the annual Harvest Gathering, an environmentally mindful festival showcasing regional talent in a relaxed setting. Bernard issued his follow-up album Constellation in 2003, the same year he encountered May Erlewine, who records and performs as Daisy May. Their shared musical and personal outlook quickly led to regular collaborations alongside their individual projects. He delivered his third solo set, Being This Being, in 2004, while the first joint recording under the names Seth Bernard and Daisy May appeared in 2006. This Here, his fourth solo album, arrived in 2008, followed in 2009 by the second duo effort Welcome Back, credited to Samuel Seth Bernard and May Erlewine. Erlewine maintains additional affiliations with Airborne & Aquatic and HiLo. Beyond music, Bernard maintains an active role as an advocate, journeying abroad to promote music education, community engagement, and ecological responsibility.
