Biography
The Seth Yacovone Band originated in Burlington, Vermont, during the summer of 1995. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Yacovone remains the sole founding member, with bassist Tommy Coggio and drummer Steve Hadeka forming the current lineup. Their debut appearance took place on January 2, 1996, at Nectar's in Burlington, where the repertoire centered on traditional blues. Growing recognition and an expanding audience led to additional bookings, including opening slots for Koko Taylor, Ian Moore, and "Monster" Mike Welch. In August 1996, Phish's manager invited the group to perform at the Clifford Ball in Plattsburgh, New York—their first concert beyond Vermont. That fall brought further development as the musicians retained blues roots while incorporating improvisation, and dates in Portland, Maine; Albany, New York; and Boston followed. One year later they issued their debut album, Bobfred's Bathtub Minstrel. The next spring produced the live recording Yessir!, captured at Club Metronome in Burlington. Summer engagements included support for B.B. King, the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, and Storyville. In November 1998 Yacovone sat in with Phish before 14,000 listeners at the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts. The appearance heightened visibility and sparked interest among new listeners throughout New England. December brought the band's first headline date at Higher Ground in Winooski, Vermont, plus a sold-out show at the House of Blues in Cambridge, Massachusetts. July 2000 saw the release of their third album, Dannemora, which retained blues elements while expanding into jam band and groove territory. The group sustains a demanding touring schedule centered on the northeastern United States. Phish lyricist Tom Marshall placed the band under an exclusive management contract, resulting in the 2002 release of their first project under that arrangement, the blues-oriented Standing on the Sound.
