In 1991, jazz singer Pamela Laws crossed paths with bassist Nancy Hess in Berkeley, California. Their rapport sparked a series of acoustic gigs across Northern California before the pair shifted to electric instrumentation by recruiting guitarist Ken Weller and drummer Matt Boudreau. Now called Seven Day Diary, the quartet began performing throughout the Bay Area and issued the Figure Six EP. Warner Bros. responded to the strong college-radio rotation by signing the band, re-releasing the EP, and delivering the 1995 album Skin and Blister.
