Biography
A project fusing psychedelic rock with international folk traditions, Sexwitch unites Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes, producer Dan Carey, and the band TOY. Its origins trace to their 2013 collaboration on “The Bride,” a cover of a pre-revolution Iranian folk song that Carey issued on his Speedy Wunderground label. Seeking further joint work, he and Khan searched through record shops for psych-folk material from Morocco, Thailand, Iran, and the United States that they wished to reinterpret. They named the endeavor Sexwitch to reflect the music’s mystical and sensual force, and the project first appeared live with an unannounced performance at Wales’ Green Man Festival in August 2015. Recorded at Carey’s South London studio, the self-titled debut album arrived the following month.
