During the early 1990s the San Francisco Seals arose when Barbara Manning, Melanie Clarin, and Kim Osterwald left World of Pooh behind. Manning served as lead vocalist and sole writer of the group’s original material, Clarin supplied drums along with vocals, accordion, and assorted other instruments, and Osterwald contributed cello. Although the band’s sound remained rooted in pop and drew heavily from the 1960s Bay Area tradition, early recordings also incorporated samples and odd noises; these elements receded once the musicians expanded their instrumental range and concentrated on live performance. Manning regularly included covers of lesser-known songs in both the studio and concert settings.

After issuing several seven-inch singles that featured Margaret Murray, ex-U.S. Saucer, on bass, the Seals went on the road with bassist Chris Milner of the Molecules and drummer Jay Page. Guitarist Brently Pusser, previously of Nerd Rock Pioneers and 3 Day Stubble, entered the lineup to record the quartet’s debut album, Nowhere, which Matador released in 1994; Murray and Clarin also appear on the LP. The following year brought the second album, Truth Walks in Sleepy Shadows; after touring behind the release the band dissolved, an outcome Manning described as permanent. Having previously fronted 28th Day, the Tablespoons, and World of Pooh, Manning has issued solo recordings and earned praise from underground critics for her distinctive songwriting.
