An innovative eight-piece ensemble based in San Francisco, the SFJAZZ Collective maintains a rotating roster that mixes emerging talents with seasoned veterans. Launched in 2004 as a nonprofit, the organization maintains a regular presence at the San Francisco Jazz Festival and devotes each season to fresh interpretations of a single major modern jazz composer along with original works written by its own members. Its fluid personnel over the years has encompassed saxophonist Joshua Redman, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, trombonist Josh Roseman, bassist Robert Hurst, drummer Brian Blade, and additional acclaimed players. The group issued its self-titled debut on Nonesuch in 2005; the follow-up, SF Jazz Collective, Vol. 2, appeared the next year. Subsequent releases included the Thelonious Monk-themed Live 2007: 4th Annual Concert Tour, the Wayne Shorter-themed Live 2008: 5th Annual Concert Tour, and the McCoy Tyner-themed Live 2009: 6th Annual Concert Tour. In 2011 the ensemble presented Music of Stevie Wonder and New Compositions: Live in New York 2011 Season 8. Marking its 2015 season, the Collective issued the limited-edition album The Music of Michael Jackson & Original Compositions.
