Shafqat Ali Khan, youngest son of Salamat Ali Khan, commands mastery of the Ghazal tradition within Indian classical music. He first stepped onto a stage at seven during the Lahore Music Festival, and his soulful singing has sustained critical interest ever since. The New York Times described one such performance by noting “exuberant complications, in which melodic gestures join hand waving and synchronized finger-pointing to form an eloquent symbiosis.” Among the honors Khan has collected are the Amir Khusro award as “best classical singer” in 1986, a gold medal from Fairslabad University in 1987, and a Ghande award from New Delhi University in 1995. He appeared at the Folklife Festival of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. in both 1988 and 1996.
