Formed during 1996 in Roanoke, VA after a triumphant staging of "No Phase," a modernistic and unconventional visual and musical piece, Shakespace quickly generated forward motion. The unmistakable draw of the group's live shows earned an immediate and devoted audience, which in turn sustained the continuation of their bold explorations across both performance and recording settings. Jeremy Kolosine (guitar, synthesizer, vocals), Josh Strawn (vocals, guitar), Michelle Ferguson (vocals, bass), and Brookes Beistel (drums) formed the central lineup of this distinctive ensemble, generating enigmatic sound composites while supplying both vigorous and melodious rhythms. Following two years and numerous shows, the self-titled debut disc Shakespace surfaced on the No Phase Records label and registered considerable results. With Mitch Easter, whose credits include bands like REM and Pavement, at the mixing controls, Shakespace completed Air Sign Orange, their second album, which reached record stores in 2000.
