Biography
Shane Endsley, a Brooklyn-based trumpeter and percussionist whose work spans avant-garde, jazz, and post-rock, also moves fluidly across idioms from folk to free improvisation. Born in Denver, he trained in trumpet, percussion, and composition at the Eastman School of Music. After finishing his studies he performed with singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane. Endsley co-founded the post-rock/jazz ensemble Kneebody, whose members first connected while studying at Eastman; he has recorded several albums with the group, among them its 2005 debut studio release on trumpeter Dave Douglas’s Greenleaf label. He maintains an active presence in downtown New York circles, regularly appearing with trumpeter Ralph Alessi—often taking the drum chair—and saxophonist Tim Berne. His first solo album, 2nd Guess, appeared in 2002 on WenEnd Music. Down Beat magazine selected Endsley as one of the Top 25 trumpeters of his generation in 2007. He returned in 2011 with Then the Other on Low Electrical Records.
