Shari Lewis delivered family-friendly fare to successive waves of young viewers. From the 1950s onward she appeared on screens and on records alongside her signature puppet companion, Lamb Chop, establishing an unmatched association with high-caliber preschool programming across the United States.

New York City provided the setting for her upbringing inside a theatrical household. At eighteen she claimed victory on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and promptly began presenting Fact 'n' Fun for NBC. Additional series soon followed, among them The Shari Lewis Show, which brought Lamb Chop, Hush Puppy, Charlie Horse, and additional characters to the screen.

Recordings appeared shortly thereafter. Her debut LP, Fun in Shariland, arrived in 1958 and collected activity tunes and rhyming numbers first heard on television. Further titles came afterward, such as One Minute Bedtime Stories, an album that highlighted her celebrated knack for comic pacing.

She wrote more than twenty-two children's books and accumulated numerous Emmys together with a Peabody award. Though absent from television throughout the seventies and eighties, Lewis kept issuing albums, among them Lamb Chop In the Land of No Manners and Don't Wake Your Mother, both issued by A&M Records, while also taking up the baton as a symphony conductor. In 1983 she was cited among the ten most influential women in America and received recognition at the Kennedy Center.

Early in the nineties she resumed her television presence by hosting Lamb Chop's Play Along twice daily on PBS. The series showcased her relaxed vocal approach along with games and straightforward craft ideas suited to young audiences. Demonstrating that work in children's music sustains youthful energy, she went on to produce additional videos and recordings, one of which was the video Lamb Chop's Special Chanukah.
