Sharon MaRee moves with equal assurance between unadulterated gospel and mainstream soul, anchored in deep African-American musical heritage. Born Sharon Norwood and raised in California, she began singing at the age of nine. Her father, a priest who also sang, and her devout mother created an early and lasting church environment. She continues a family line of vocalists that includes her older sister, the respected gospel singer Elaine Norwood, and their aunt Dorothy. Early in her career MaRee traveled internationally as a background vocalist, appearing on recordings and in performances alongside artists such as Norman Hutchins, Brian Culbertson, DeNetria Champ, Karen Briggs, and her sister Elaine. In 1999 she starred in the sold-out stage musical These Trying Times at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, CA. She joined James Ingram on a world tour and later performed with the Isley Brothers and Angela Winbush. Additional highlights include appearances with Mariah Carey on the Soul Train awards, with Fred Hammond on the Parade of Stars, and as accompanist for Gladys Knight. Further television work encompassed the Arsenio Hall Show alongside artists including Shirley Caesar, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno supporting Yolanda Adams, the Isley Brothers on Soul Train, the Today Show, Good Morning America, and programs on the BET Network. MaRee issued her first album, God Is Real, on the DASM label in 2007. Her follow-up, Triumph, arrived in 2009 on the T label and featured production by Jason White. For many years she has held the post of assistant choir director for the Music Worship Ministry at the Apostolic Faith Home Assembly Church in Los Angeles.
