Biography
Pittsburgh-based producer Shawn Rudiman has worked in multiple strains of hardware-driven electronic music since 1989. First recognized as one member of the electro-industrial duo T.H.D., he moved into techno by the close of the 1990s and earned broad respect in the underground electronic community for wholly improvised live performances. Solo material began appearing in 1999, and he started the Technoir Audio label a few years afterward. His abundant discography has covered raw, forceful techno as well as more reverberant excursions, frequently shifting among approaches across albums such as Machine Soul Terminal (2008) and Conduit (2020), while directing greater attention to ambient pieces on the 2021 release Flow State.
During the late 1980s Rudiman began exploring equipment at his uncle’s recording studio. Once he had acquired skills in MIDI programming and sequencing, he formed T.H.D. (Total Harmonic Distortion) with Ed Vargo, and the pair issued their debut cassette in 1991. They quickly attracted notice in the EBM/industrial circuit, placing albums on Cleopatra and Pendragon Records, contributing to numerous compilations, and remixing material by Christian Death and Penal Colony. In 1998 Rudiman left rural Pennsylvania for Pittsburgh, when the city still supported an active warehouse rave scene. While continuing to amass analog gear, he left his industrial background behind and turned to producing techno and electro. Three records appeared on the imprint linked to HyperVinyl Records, the Pittsburgh shop then in operation. Additional EPs came out on Daniel Bell’s Detroit-based 7th City and the Dutch acid label X-Trax.
Rudiman established Technoir Audio in the early 2000s. After several EPs, one of which was a split 12" with Arne Weinberg, the debut solo album Synthesexual was issued in 2004. He maintained an international touring schedule and continued releasing on his own label as well as imprints such as Sound Architecture and Dust Science Recordings. Machine Soul Terminal arrived on the Swedish label Finest Blend Recordings in 2008. Rudiman returned to T.H.D. in 2009 with the LP The Evolution of Our Decay and the companion release Subconscious Drip on 23db Records.
The Uplink EP appeared in 2013 on Kirk Degiorgio’s Applied Rhythmic Technology, together with the four-part Monolithic Soul on Detroit Techno Militia. Pittsburgh Tracks released the full-length Timespan in 2017, followed by the EP ...The Next Planet Over in 2018. Berlin’s Tresor put out the Autonomic Pilot EP in 2019. AMS > PIT, a collaboration with Jordan GCZ of Juju & Jordash, surfaced on Love What You Feel in February 2020. The following June, Pittsburgh Tracks issued the dubby, sci-fi-influenced album Conduit. The more ambient-oriented Flow State arrived in 2021.
