Seattle-based multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter Shawn Weaver has introduced a contemporary perspective to longstanding Jewish musical traditions. Leading the group Shawn's Kugel, which he assembled in 1996 alongside keyboardist and accordion player Steve Rice, bassist Spencer Hoveskeland, and drummer and percussionist Will Dowd, Weaver has merged klezmer elements with pop and rock sensibilities. Earlier recognition came through his participation in the irreverent klezmer and Jewish folk ensemble the Mazletones. That ensemble, known for numbers including "Seattle, Seattle" and "Borscht Rider in the Sky," concluded its run with a final performance at Temple Beth Am's Kleg Festival in Seattle on November 8, 1998. In 2000 Weaver collaborated with his spouse Wendy Marcus, herself an ex-Mazletones participant who contributes violin and vocals, along with their children, to create the recording Most Precious of Days.
