Shelley Laine, a Texas-based singer and songwriter, first cultivated her passion for music through her parents’ broad listening habits, which encompassed classical, jazz, country, gospel, blues, and rock. At age 16 she began composing original material and appearing at regional fairs and benefit shows, among them an opening slot for Lisa Loeb at one such concert. A self-released CD of hers reached veteran promotions and marketing executive Ed Spacek, whose past clients include Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, the Dixie Chicks, and LeAnn Rimes, among others; the encounter resulted in a recording agreement with Palo-Duro Records. Her debut album, Skipping Stones, arrived in 2001 and revealed the emerging artist’s flair for writing memorable country-pop songs.
