Biography
Born on Bribie Island in Queensland, Australia, Sherry is the daughter of country singer Noelene Rich. She gained attention on the Australian music circuit in the late 1980s through her work as a hard-rocking guitarist and vocalist. Performing as Sherry Valier, she cut several cult singles plus an album with Melbourne indie rock band Girl Monstar. Once Girl Monstar disbanded in 1993, Rich reconnected with her origins by teaming with key Australian country players Steve Connolly on guitar, Douglas Lee Robertson on bass and Steve Morrison on drums. Under the name Sherry Rich And The Grievous Angels she issued two EPs: a self-titled set in 1994 and Trying To Write A Love Song in 1996, the second of which brought in Nick Grant to replace the recently deceased Connolly.
After settling in Nashville, Tennessee, the heart of country music in the United States, Rich delivered her first full-length album in 1997. Credited to Sherry Rich And Courtesy Move, the record drew on backing musicians from US alt-country/indie outfit Wilco. Its blend of country, pop and rock highlighted Rich as a talented and melodic songwriter and was praised as one of the strongest roots-rock releases of the year. She next joined Ashley Naylor of Even to make a 1960s-styled guitar-pop album under the name the Grapes. In 2000 she independently released The Rich Family Album, recorded with her mother, brother Rusty and husband Rick Plant. Plant also worked with Rich on the 2004 children’s album Songs For Little Monkeys, issued by the husband-and-wife duo as the Mudcakes.
