Biography
Emerging from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Sherrys formed as a girl group during the early 1960s under the direction of Little Joe Cook, who had already fronted the Thrillers and delivered their 1957 hit single ‘Peanut’. The lineup united his daughters Delphine Cook and Dinell—Delphine handling lead vocals—together with niece Charlotte Butler and family friend Delores ‘Honey’ Wylie. Their debut release, ‘Pop Pop Pop-Pie’, reached number 25 on the US R&B chart and number 36 on the pop chart in 1962; although the track itself remained lightweight, its arrival amid a Philadelphia-engineered dance craze propelled it to national success. The similarly slight follow-up ‘Slop Time’ appeared in 1963. The group dissolved soon after, yet Charlotte Butler later married a Swedish rock ‘n’ roll star and performed with him on their own television show.
