Austin-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Sam Chown produces kaleidoscopic, free-form meta-pop as Shmu, weaving together psychedelia, R&B, prog, and yacht rock. His recordings blend acoustic and electronic instruments alongside samples, glitched-out noise, and smooth vocal harmonies, resulting in music that feels simultaneously soothing and frenetic while balancing catchy hooks with sonic boundary-pushing. Active as Shmu since the early 2000s, the project’s key releases encompass the manic shoegaze of Shhh!!!! from 2015 and the trippy new wave of Lead Me to the Glow in 2018. Beyond solo efforts, Chown belongs to the neo-prog duo Zorch and has performed on drums for Botany, Vinyl Williams, and additional acts.

Chown started playing music during childhood, focusing on drums while also studying guitar and piano. Through steady practice and ongoing documentation of his development, he sharpened his abilities and built up extensive archives of recordings. He enrolled at the Berklee College of Music yet paused drumming temporarily after developing tendonitis. With former college roommate Zac Traeger he formed Zorch, later relocating to Austin where the duo began performing following nearly a year of songwriting and sound refinement. Throughout this period Chown continued solo work as Shmu, issuing the debut Discipline/Communication in 2009; the album received a full reissue in 2012 on his Grand Theft Zamboni label, which was subsequently renamed GTZ Records. Zorch joined Sargent House Records and delivered its first album, Zzoorrcchh, in 2013; that same year Shmu appeared on releases by Marijuana Deathsquads and Tera Melos. The Chroma Key EP followed in 2014, succeeded by the deconstructed shoegaze album Shhh!!!! in 2015 and the second EP Oooze in 2016.

Lead Me to the Glow surfaced in 2018 with a smoother, vaporwave-influenced approach; footwork producer Jlin supplied a remix of the album’s notably R&B-leaning track “All Will Be Erased.” Also that year Chown issued The Vault, Pt. 4, compiling recordings made between 2006 and 2010. He partnered with Christopher Royal King of This Will Destroy You in the project Private Life, releasing the prog-meets-post-punk album Silent Partner. After serving as touring drummer for Vinyl Williams, Chown put out Vish, his fourth Shmu full-length, in 2019; Felicia Douglass of Dirty Projectors and Ava Luna contributed vocals to the track “Jetskis in Virginia.” Shmu then signed with French label Requiem Pour un Twister and released Pure Bliss in 2020.
