Biography
An enigmatic masked collective operating under the name Shobaleader One takes direction from IDM figure Squarepusher, otherwise known as Tom Jenkinson. The ensemble came together in 2009, initially comprising Jenkinson on bass and vocals alongside Strobe Nazard on keyboards, Sten t'Mech on guitar, Arg Nution on guitar, and Company Laser on drums. Its opening offering, the swinging electro-funk single "Cryptic Motion," surfaced unexpectedly on the French imprint Ed Banger in September 2010, paired with a Mr. Oizo remix. Warp, Squarepusher's customary outlet, followed one month later with the project's debut album d'Demonstrator. Departing from the frenetic, jazz-inflected drill'n'bass typically associated with Jenkinson, the record presented robotic rock tracks steeped in '80s R&B, every cut shaped by his talkbox-treated vocals. After several years of inactivity while Jenkinson returned to solo work, the band resumed live performances in 2016 without Sten t'Mech. Warp then issued Elektrac in 2017, a live set documenting full-band interpretations of Squarepusher material drawn from the earliest EPs through d'Demonstrator.
