Formed in Detroit, the ambient and dub techno trio Shorelights unites Rod Modell of Deepchord with Walter Wasacz and Christopher McNamara from the multimedia collective NoSpectacle. Drawing on the serene beauty of the Great Lakes, the group shapes its sound to recreate that tranquil atmosphere for listeners at home.

Their first album, Summer Cottage Soundscapes, emerged in 2017 on Modell’s Echospace label after being captured during spring rain at a campsite in Lakeport, Michigan, beside the southern shores of Lake Huron. Although aligned with the label’s hallmark gauzy shimmer and muted field recordings, the release ventured further into purely ambient territory, free of beats and structured as one continuous hour-long piece. The follow-up, Ancient Lights, arrived in 2018 on Barcelona’s Subwax, a roster that includes Fluxion and Yagya. Retaining much the same atmospheric approach as its predecessor, the album introduced rhythmic elements for the first time, its second half shifting toward more club-oriented dub techno built on four-on-the-floor patterns.
