Biography
Gary Erwin, professionally known as Shrimp City Slim, entered the world in Chicago, Illinois, during 1953. Piano lessons occupied his teenage years, after which blues music quickly captured his interest. Several local blues ensembles in the Chicago area featured his playing until 1983, when he relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, and established the Erwin Music imprint. Seven albums of the style he terms lowcountry blues—a fusion of Carolina coast blues, soul, and R&B—have appeared on that label: Gone with the Wind (1992), Blues on the Beach (1994), Blue Palmetto (1996), I Work Nights (2000), Ancestor Worship (2000), and Highway 17 (2003). More recently Slim has served as a radio DJ for programs centered on blues and additional southeastern musical traditions.
