Originating from a lineage of vocalists engaged in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) music movement, Pace-Rhodes was raised in that environment alongside her siblings. In the mid-'70s the group they formed, The Anointed Pace Sisters of Atlanta, gained notice for its contemporary R&B gospel approach. Her rendition of "That Name" was featured on one of Edwin Hawkins's Music and Arts seminal albums in 1987. Edwin Hawkins personally urged the head of Savoy-Malaco Records to sign the belting singer as a solo artist, and the label followed through. Pace-Rhodes favored material recalling the days of Mahalia Jackson and the Ward Singers over modern styles.
