Biography
An alternative R&B performer recognized for her gently expressive vocal style and upfront approach to songwriting, Siaira Shawn first gained wider attention in 2018 after her track “Wrong Speed” secured a spot on the soundtrack for the comedy-drama series Insecure.
Siaira Harris, who was born and raised in San Francisco and has also spent time living in New York, Oakland, and Los Angeles, discovered an interest in the performing arts while still a child and later expanded into literature, poetry, and music. Those pursuits eventually shaped a dual path that combined an independent recording career with ongoing work in youth programs and arts education. Featured appearances on numerous underground projects marked the second half of the 2000s, while the following decade saw her release solo EPs including Ghost (2013) and the two-part Flowers While You’re Here (2015) alongside contributions to recordings by Columbia Nights and Audra the Rapper.
A contest sponsored by Afropunk awarded her placement in the third season of Issa Rae’s Insecure in 2018; the ballad “Wrong Speed” landed in the seventh episode and subsequently appeared on the season’s official soundtrack positioned between a duet from Victoria Monét and Lucky Daye and a track by Lion Babe. Just weeks later she issued the single “Islands,” followed in 2019 by several more standalone releases and the Tender EP.
