In 1996, Sick Shift formed in Santa Barbara, California, intent on uncovering fresh expressions within established punk rock. The band upheld a high-energy approach that incorporated occasional hardcore punk edges and punk-pop touches, enabling their anthemic tracks to rapidly attract a large audience. Following repeated personnel shifts, the lineup stabilized around Jeff Feuerhaken on vocals and guitar, Dan Simon on guitar, bassist Gary Braun, and drummer Ricky Rhiger. Their forceful stage command during intense regional shows gradually positioned the group to record a debut album. Engaging producer Angus Cooke, previously associated with Ataris, the Californians issued their independently released first full-length, Angry Badgers, in 1999. After securing notable local radio airplay and placements on multiple compilation discs, Sick Shift launched an extended tour across the U.S. and Canada.
