Biography
Since emerging at the start of the 2000s, Sid nearly reached the upper ranks of J-rock during that decade by leaving behind their visual kei origins in favor of a broader sonic palette that drew from power pop and disco while also nodding toward heavy metal, blues, and Mediterranean folk traditions. Vocalist Mao and bassist Aki formed the group in 2003, soon recruiting guitarist Shinji and drummer Yuuya (who received official status after serving as session musicians through 2004). Prior band experience among all four musicians, most notably Mao and Yuuya’s time in the little-known act Shula, helped them land a contract with Danger Crue, a leading Japanese independent label that also represented Mucc and Ken from L’Arc-en-Ciel.
The band’s debut release, the tour-only single “Kaijou-Ban,” appeared in early 2004. Their profile rose further that May when they stepped in for Miyavi at Anime Central in the United States. The American performance proved successful, prompting the quick release of the album Renai (“Pitiful”). Although the visual kei effort did not register on the Oricon charts, extensive touring across Japan demonstrated an already sizable domestic following. The group gradually moved away from gothic visual kei aesthetics while preserving eccentric elements in their public persona. This evolution toward a pop-rock direction surfaced clearly on the second album, Hoshi No Miyako (“City of Stars,” 2005), and reached full realization with Play (2006). Chart performance improved accordingly, as Hoshi No Miyako peaked at number 26, Play reached number nine, and Sentimental Macchiato climbed to number eight in 2008; three singles from this period also entered the national Top Five during 2007.
In late 2008 Sid secured a major-label agreement with Sony’s Ki/oon imprint, issuing their fifth album, Hikari (“Light”), the following year. The polished production suited mainstream tastes, and substantial promotional support—including prominent video placements and anime ending-theme placements—expanded their visibility, resulting in a career-best number-two debut. International audiences continued to expand steadily even as the band maintained strong popularity at home, where the subsequent releases Dead Stock (2011) and M&W (2012) also performed well; the lighter Outsider arrived in 2014.
Sid then entered a three-year break during which Mao pursued solo work, releasing the Latin-jazz mini-album Maison de M in 2016. Fans were offered the compilation All Singles Best that same year. The band resumed activity in 2017 with Nomad, their ninth album and a notable return to strength. The mini-album Ichiban Sukina Basho (“My Favorite Place”) followed in 2018, and the tenth studio album, Shounin Yokkyuu (“Need for Approval”), appeared in 2019.
