Originating from Moosa in Punjab’s Mansa district, singer and lyricist Sidhu Moose Wala first drew widespread attention in 2017 with the gangsta rap single “So High,” a collaboration recorded with Canadian producer Byg Byrd. After beginning to write lyrics during his electrical engineering studies in India, Wala moved to Canada in 2016 and issued his debut single “G Wagon” the next year. Later that year his profile rose sharply through the Byg Byrd partnership on “So High,” his first release on the Humble Music label; the track tapped the growing South Asian gangsta rap wave and earned him the Best Lyricist Award at the Brit Asia Music Awards. Throughout the following year he continued recording with Byg Byrd on tracks such as “Tochan,” “Dollar,” and “Selfmade,” while also scoring success with “Famous” and “Warning Shots.” Sidhu Moose Wala died on May 29, 2022, at age 28, after sustaining gunshot wounds inside his car.
