Biography
Sidiki Diabaté, a Malian vocalist, instrumentalist, and beatmaker, descends from a distinguished family line of kora virtuosos that includes his pioneering father Toumani Diabaté and his namesake grandfather Sidiki Diabaté Sr. While respecting the ancestral griot customs, he immersed himself in kora technique during childhood on this captivating West African stringed instrument fashioned from a calabash resonator, yet he also ventured into vibrant Afro-pop realms and digital production techniques, occasionally merging these styles across releases such as Diabateba Music, Vol. 1 from 2016 and Béni issued in 2019.
The Diabaté clan has yielded generations of griots—hereditary storytellers, versifiers, and performers—many excelling on the kora. His grandfather, an iconic figure in Mali, modernized the instrument’s reach by producing its inaugural recording back in 1970, and his father Toumani broadened its global appeal via numerous distinguished recordings and partnerships with musicians beyond African traditions. For his own development, Sidiki took up the hereditary instrument in his youth, receiving limited guidance from his father, which prompted the emerging griot to forge an independent artistic path and cultivate distinct inspirations. During his formative years spanning the 1990s and the initial 2000s, he maintained equilibrium between kora heritage and the dynamic sounds surrounding him, encompassing rap, rhythm and blues, synthesized music, and multiple strains of Afro-pop.
Sidiki’s initial professional endeavors centered more on rap production, frequently alongside rapper and fellow griot Iba One, even as he gained recognition for his kora proficiency. In 2014, he collaborated with his father on an enchanting set of paternal-filial kora pairings entitled Toumani & Sidiki. This well-received effort, which paid tribute to and reinterpreted time-honored kora compositions, brought Sidiki into prominence within the broader international music scene. His independent debut arrived in 2016 via Diabateba Music, Vol. 1, an album oriented toward Afro-pop that highlighted his abilities in vocal performance, composition, and studio production. The subsequent year, Sidiki joined his father alongside French rock artist -M- to create the group Lamomali, which put out a self-named record. Back to individual projects, he integrated rhythm and blues with rap components alongside sporadic nods to tradition on Béni in 2019. An additional track called “Conscience tranquille” came out in 2020.
